Feedback on ideas which can help our game is vital. Two HANA members, Ross Gallo and Mike Mayo came up with an idea. Please let us at HANA know what you think.

(This post stems from the original article, linked to in the first thread. Please read that to make sense of this post)

As part of the ongoing effort to make it clear that Horseplayers voices need to be heard, the first track that has been selected for horseplayers to bet is Will Rodgers Downs.

This track was selected due to a normally small handle, and if enough players participate in this effort, an immediate impact should be seen in the pools.

The HANA Get in the Pool Race for week one is R6 Tues 3/31/2009 at Will Rogers Downs.

Most ADWs take WRD, especially on a Tuesday.

I'd like to clear up some misconceptions about what we are doing and why.

This (hopefully) will be horseplayers showing the ability to act cohesively as one.

This is NOT a donation.

We ask that Each player handicap and bet the race just as you would any other race in your normal routine betting.

Initially wagering amounts were talked about and it was suggested that a range of somewhere between $25-$75 would be optimal. However no one should feel obligated to bet outside of their comfort zone. Handicap and bet the race as you normally would.

A wager of any type and amount on this race will be appreciated.

Craig Walker from Trackmaster.com was kind enough to provide HANA members with free .pdf past performances for the race.

Thanks Jeff...

Based on a first impression, I've got to say that the morning lines on this race are really awful...

I did not have a UDM choice in this race but put my earlybird $40 on my top UPR selection. We'll see what happens.

The ESPN article stated that "only" $31,652 was wagered on the 6th race at WRD. I watched the win, place, show pools had around $12,000. That means around $20,000 had to be bet into the exotics. I bet trifectas because of the short odds on 3 and 10 and apparently everyone else did the same.

I'm not sure what the ESPN reporter meant by "only" but I think that was more than the 5th race. I hope his reporting is based on facts. Mike Mayo had a great idea imo but I doubt if it would have had much sucess without the efforts and backing of HANA members. Leaving out any reference to HANA seems to me like some facts were simply missing.

I was curious so I checked the mutual pools for WRD and the 6th race had around twice the money as the other races. The handle on the 6th race was more than $31,000 as reported by ESPN. The reporter just didn't have correct information or maybe the story was slanted in favor of the tracks to discourage this kind of thing.

You can get the pool info from both the BrisNet and Equibase charts while they still have them up on their sites.

It looks like week one was a success. HANA Blog:

For week 2 we are going to select a pick3 pool at Tampa Bay Downs on Tuesday. Sequence of races to be announced when entries come out this weekend.

HANA Get In The Pool Week Two
This week we are targeting a pick3.

Where?
Tampa Bay Downs

When?
Tuesday 4/7/2009

Race Number?
We have selected the pick-3 spanning races 6, 7, and 8.

Again, this is not a donation. We're not asking anyone to bet outside their cofort zone. All we ask is that this Tuesday you handicap TAM races 6, 7, 8 and and bet the pick 3 if you see something you like... just like you normally would.

For those of you who haven't followed TAM this meet here's a little help.

Looks like handle for our pick3, races 678, was about 64 percent higher than an average of the other pick 3's on the same TAM card:

Races P3 Pool
-----------------
234 18,370
345 16,334
456 13,340
567 12,735
678 27,595***
789 na
8910 23,222

~
Avg for other pick3's
on the same card: 16,800
~
Our pick3... races 6,7,8 27,595
~
Percentage increase: 27595/16800 = 1.64

On to Week 3 - The Mountain...

HANA Get In The Pool HAW R6 Sat 4/25/2009

You may have heard or read that Turf Paradise was to be the target track this Saturday for the HANA Get In The Pool race. Unfortunately, many horseplayers have expressed some big concerns about the law in Arizona which makes it a felony to use an ADW. Many players were very uncomfortable with this. At the HANA conference call Wednesday night it was discussed and decided that we would NOT bet Turf Paradise because of this law.

We will be doing R6 at Hawthorne this Saturday 4/25/2009 instead. This is a stakes race with an eleven horse field with a morning line favorite at 4-1. NICE AND JUICY.

We also decided to target the RACE and not a specific pool. This way you can handicap the race as you normally would and bet the pool (WPS, Exacta, Tri, Super, etc.) where you see the most value.

GOOD LUCK ON SATURDAY.
